French commercial broadcaster M6 is ready to launch two new free-to-air channels by the end of this year, according to CEO Nicolas de Tavernost.

One of the channels is likely to be a generalist female-skewing service, while the other will focus on cinema, drama and magazine shows aimed at a family audience. De Tavernost’s comments in an interview with Les Echos newspaper follow Canal Plus CEO Bertrand Méheut’s announcement last week that the pay TV operator would use its ‘bonus’ channel on the country’s digital-terrestrial platform after switchover later this year.

De Tavernost said he remained in favour of a moratorium on new channel launches in principle, however, citing lack of growth in the advertising market and a possible challenge to the award of ‘bonus’ channels to the major broadcasters by the European Commission. He also suggested that it would be sensible to wait until broadcasters were ready to adopt new DVB-T2 technology before launching any new channels.
